GROT Yakov Karlovich (1812 - 1893, St. Petersburg), philologist, historian, Full Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1855). Graduated from the Tsarskoselsky Lyceum in 1832. Professor at the Alexandrovsky Lyceum (1853-62). Chair of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences (1884), Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences (1889). Specialised in Scandinavian Literature. A celebrated expert on 18th-19th centuries Russian Literature, lexicographer, and author of works on 18-19th centuries Russian History. Developed standards for Russian orthography that remained in force until 1918. Member (1859) and Chairman (1866-70) of the Literary Collection. In the 1850-80s, he lived at 48 First Line of Vasilievsky Island, and in the early 1890s at the House of Academics (today 2/1 Leitenanta Schmidta Embankment; memorial plaque installed). Buried at the Novodevichye Cemetery.
