KURCHATOV Igor Vasilievich (1903-1960), physicist, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1943), Hero of Socialist Labor (1949, 1951, 1954). Studied at the Petrograd Polytechnical Institute in 1921, graduating two years later from the University of Crimea. From 1925 to 1942, Kurchatov held various offices at the Institute of Physics and Technology (26 Politekhnicheskaya Street; memorial plaque installed), at the Khlopin Radium Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad (where he worked with a cyclotron), and taught at the Leningrad Industrial Institute and the Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. In 1943, he moved to Moscow, where he organized and supervised the USSR's atomic project. In 1943, as part of this project, he set up Laboratory No. 2, which was transformed into the Institute of Atomic Energy in 1955 (Kurchatov's name was given to the institute), which he presided over until the end of his life. Kurchatov's list of awards includes the Lenin Prize (1957), the Stalin Prize (1942, 1949, 1951, and 1954). The Academy of Sciences of the USSR instituted a golden medal and a prize as a tribute to Kurchatov's memory. In the 1930s, he lived at 57 Krasnykh Zor Street (today Kamennoostrovsky Avenue). In 1964, his name was given to a street (formerly Yashumov Lane).
