STRUVE Peter Berngardovich (1870-1944), economist, sociologist, essayist, public figure and politician, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1917. He graduated from Petersburg University with a major in law in 1895. He was a librarian in the Ministry of Finance in 1892-94 and contract lecturer at Petersburg University in 1898-99. The leader of the so-called legal marxism, he was the virtual editor of such magazines as Novoe Slovo in 1897, Zhizn in 1897-1901, and Nachalo in 1899 and wrote the Manifesto of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party in 1898. He was arrested and exiled to Tver for participating in the demonstration near Kazan Cathedral in 1901. Living abroad from 1901, he was the editor of Osvobozhdenie, a foreign magazine, and a founding member of the Union of Liberation in 1903. Back in St. Petersburg in the autumn of 1905, he became a member of the Central Committee of the Constitutional Democratic Party from 1906 and the editor of Polyarnaya Zvezda in 1905-06 and Russkaya Mysl from 1906. He was a deputy of the Second State Duma in 1907. A teacher at the Polytechnical Institute from 1906 promoted to a professor in 1917, he lived in the second professor's house at 29 Politekhnicheskaya Street. He also worked as a teacher at Petersburg University and Higher Women's (Bestuzhev) Courses from 1910. He left Petrograd in 1918. During the Civil War, he was a member of the governments of A. I. Denikin and P. N. Wrangel. He emigrated in 1921 to edit a number of newspapers and magazines abroad. He withdrew from political activity in the 1930s and worked as a teacher in Belgrade. His major works are on the economic history of Russia, economic theory, and sociology.
