SHKIPERSKY CANAL (Skippers' Canal) (before 1859, Chernaya Rechka (the Black River) or Glukhoy Protok (the Dead Canal), a small river in the western part of Vasilievsky Island, flowed from the marshes of Smolensky field and drained into the Gulf of Finland in the area of Galernaya Harbour. Naval barracks, warehouses and workshops for sailors, boatswains and skippers of Galerny Port (Galley Port) (hence, the name) were constructed at its mouth in the first third of the 18th century. In 1906-20s, the Shkipersky Canal was filled with earth to lay the street of the same name along its route (from Detskaya Street to the large reservoir of Galernaya Harbour). Shkipersky Garden laid in Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island in the area of the Shkipersky Canal bears its name. The guardhouse of Galerny port (No 21, buiding 1; 1824-26, architect Alexander Shtaubert), a monument of classic-style architecture, has been preserved to present day. Multistory commercial houses 4 and 6 were constructed in the beginning of the 20th century, and No 3 and No 9 were put up in 1960-70s. The spectacular building (No 5, 1950s; architects Boris Serebrovsky and O.K. Ustinova) is notable for its classic decoration of the facade.
