LIEUTENANT SCHMIDT EMBANKMENT (until 1887, the Bolshaya Neva Embankment; until 1918, the Nikolaevskaya Embankment), on the right bank of the Bolshaya Neva River, between Seventh Line and Twenty Third Line of Vasilievsky Island. Named after P.P. Schmidt (1867-1906), who took part in the Revolution of 1905-07. All the buildings along the embankment were constructed in the 1720-30s, and were repeatedly reconstructed. The architecture's "step structure" comes from the bend of the river-bed. The granite embankment, with a staircase, ramps and mooring wall, was constructed in 1848-54 and partially rebuilt in 1936-37 over the course of the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge reconstruction. Architectural monuments include building no. 1 (House of Academics); building no. 5 (reconstructed in 1815-16); building no. 17, formerly the Naval Cadet Corps, today the Peter the Great Naval Corps (St. Petersburg Naval Institute; 1796-98, architect P.I. Volkov), building no. 27, the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Metochion; building no. 31 (reconstructed in 1857-58, architect K.I. Reimers); building no. 39, the Rostov Yaroslavl Synodal Metochion; building no. 41 (reconstructed in 1883, architect A.K. Bruni); and building no. 45, the Mining Institute. Academician I.P. Pavlov's memorial apartment museum is located in building no. 1. A.S. Dargomyzhsky lived in building no. 9 (1836-40), M.S. Voronin in building no.11, A.S. Griboedov in building no. 13 (1824-25), L. Euler in building no. 15 (1766-83), poet M.M. Kheraskov in building no. 35 (1771), Admirals G.A. Spiridov (1770s - 1791) and V.Y. Chichagov (1790s) in building no. 37, artist M.P. Botkin in building no. 41 (1883-1914), and artist P.A. Fedotov in building no. 43 (in the Finlyandsky Life Guard Regiment quarters). A monument to I.F. Krusenstern was erected in 1873 (sculptor I.N. Schroder, architect I.A. Monighetti).
