NOVOSMOLENSKAYA EMBANKMENT known as Oktyabrskaya Embankment in 1976-87 and Smolenka River Embankment in 1987-89. It was laid downstream the Smolenka River along both banks of the straightened riverbed between Nalichnaya Street and Morskaya Embankment. The embankment has been an entrance to a new residential district and an axis of St. Petersburg's sea board, which determined the dimensions of tower buildings erected by architects V. A. Sokhin, V. N. Sokolov, and P. V. Kurochkin in 1970-80s. The right-bank and left-bank passages of the embankment are linked via Korablestroiteley Bridge and Nalichny Bridge (between Vasilievsky Island and Dekabristov Island). An artificial island was built where the Smolenka River flows into the Gulf of Finland. The banks of the Smolenka River and the island are linked with bridges along Morskaya Embankment.
