GORCHAKOV Alexander Mikhailovich (1798-1883), Serene High Prince (1871), statesman, diplomat, State Chancellor (1867), Honorary Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1856). Descended from the ancient princely Rurik Dynasty. Graduated with a gold medal from the Tsarskoselsky Lyceum (1817), a school-mate of Baron M. A. Korf and Alexander Pushkin. From 1817, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was an envoy to Wurttemberg (1841-54), to the German Alliance (1850-54), and to Vienna (1854-56). In 1856-82, he was the Minister for Foreign Affairs; from 1862, Member of the State the Assembly. In 1879, he withdrew from service due to illness. From 1864, he was an Honorary Member of Imperial Public Library, and, from 1867, of the Imperial Russian History Society. In 1856-83, he lived in a ministerial apartment in the building of Ministry (6/39 Moika River Embankment; memorial plaque installed). He died in Baden-Baden (Germany), and was buried at the Holy Trinity & St. Sergius Hermitage. The tombstone, destroyed after October 1917, was restored in 1998, and that year a bust to Gorchakov was mounted in Alexandrovsky Garden (sculptor A. S. Charkin to the model by K. K. Godebsky).
