COMMANDANTS OF PETER AND PAUL FORTRESS, military officials, in charge of Ss. Peter-and-Paul Fortress, and garrisons and establishments located on its territory. In the 18th century it was the second most important post (after the post of the Governor General) in the administrative system of St. Petersburg. In the 19th century it was an honourary post, to which distinguished generals were appointed. Abolished in 1924. Commandants lived in the Fortress in the Commandant's house, 19 of them perished during their term of office and were buried in the Commandants' (Komendantskoe) cemetery.G.V. Kalashnikov.
