CHUKOVSKY Korney Ivanovich (real name Nikolay Vasilievich Korneychukov) (1882, St. Petersburg - 1969), a children's poet, critic, literary expert and translator. He was the father of L.K. Chukovskaya. Chukovsky came to St. Petersburg in 1904. In the 1910s he contributed to the Niva journal, Rech newspaper; in addition, he also organised the satirical journal Signal, published nearly ten books of criticism, and conducted many translations from W. Whitman, M. Twain, O. Henry, O. Wilde, R. Kipling and other English and American writers. Finally, he was in the charge of the children's literature department of The Sail Publishing House. From 1918 he was the head of the English-American department of the World Literature Publishing House. In the early 1920s he took part in the establishing of the House of Arts, and ran its literary department. Simultaneously, his books for children gained him general renown (the first one entitled The Crocodile (1916) was published in 1917). Chukovsky left some literary memoirs, and wrote a number of books on the technique of literary translation, on the Russian language, and on the study of the works of N.A. Nekrasov (over 100 works of Chukovsky were dedicated to him). In 1962 Chukovsky was awarded the Lenin Prize. From August 1905 he lived at 5 Akademichesky Lane, from 1906 - at 11 Kolomenskaya Street, for about 10 years, until 1917, he used to go to his summer house in Kuokkala (present-day Repino), visited by many writers and artists. Later he lived at 6 Manezhny Lane of Leningrad until 1938 (memorial plaque).
