AUER Leopold (1845-1930), violinist, pedagogue, conductor, student of J. Joachim. Came from Austria-Hungary. Lived in St. Petersburg in 1868-1917. During a tour to London, became acquainted with A. G. Rubinstein and was invited to lecture at the Petersburg Conservatory (Professor from 1868). He worked as a soloist and conductor for the Russian Musical Society's symphonic gatherings, soloist for the Mariinsky Theatre ballet orchestra, and for the Imperial Court. P.I. Tchaikovsky, A.S. Arensky, A.K. Glazunov, and S.I. Taneev all composed music for Auer. He was the most famous and renowned violin pedagogue of the 20th century. He developed his method in St. Petersburg, granting the world with legendary musicians such as E.A. Tsimbalist (Auer's student in 1901-07), M. Elman (1901-04), M.B. Polyakin (1908-18), and Y. Heifets (1910-16). In 1917, he moved to the USA. Lived in the residence of N.F. Komissarzhevsky and F.F. Komissarzhevsky at 27 Angliisky Avenue.
