Rakhlin I.Y. (1922-2002), stage director

RAKHLIN Ilya Yakovlevich (1922-2002, St. Petersburg), director, actor, People's Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1984), Honoured Worker of the Arts of Kazakhstan (1951) and Northern Osetia (1965). In 1940, he graduated from the Leningrad State Theatrical Institute (today The Academy of Theatre Arts), after studying under B. М. Sushkevich (as well as assistant professors L. S. Rudnik, N. N. Bromley, I. V. Meyerkhold). In 1938, he joined the Leningrad State Drama Theatre (today the Theatre of Drama and Comedy). From 1941, Rakhlin served on the front-line actors' brigade. In 1943-46, he worked at the Theatre of the Pacific Fleet (Vladivostok), and in 1946 joined the Leningrad New Theatre (today Lensoveta Theatre), where he stayed until 1949. Rakhlin then founded and directed the Comedy Ensemble (1950-60). In 1962-63, he directed the public performances of the All-Russian Tour and Concert Union. From 1963 until 1965, he was the director and art manager of the Public Performances Theatre in Moscow. From 1962, Rakhlin staged close to 120 public shows in many cities, and was the founder and permanent artistic director of the Leningrad Music-Hall, starting in 1966 and directing over 20 shows. Rakhlin initiated narrative review-shows. Acted in the play Always by My Side. As a director at the Music-Hall, he toured across the countries of Europe, America and Asia. In 1987, he staged his review, Together, at the Berlin Friedrichstadtpalast. In 1976, he opened the Music-Hall Studio School. He lived at 20 Thirteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island, and was buried at the Komarovskoe Cemetery.
