GERIATRIC MEDICAL-SOCIAL CENTRE, MUNICIPAL (148 Fontanka River Embankment) was the first institution of its kind in Russia. It was founded in 1994, moving to its present location in 1996. Before 1904 the building had housed the Midwives Institute, and from 1904, the Community of Sisters of Mercy in honour of General M. P. Kaufman, in Soviet times it was known as Uristky Memorial Hospital). The hospital is intended for diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of chronically ill senior citizens. The hospital also has a nursing department and a hospice department, providing both outpatient and long-term home stay care services.
