Categories / Art/Fine Arts/Art and Literary Associations

TREUGOLNIK, the artistic psychological group Treugolnik was one of the first unions of Russian avant-garde artists. It was founded on the initiative of Nikolay Kulbin. Its members (M.E. Anders, Avgust Ballier, G.K. Blank, Elena Guro, Nikolay Kalmakov, Mikhail Matyushin, Eduard Spandikov, Lyudmila Schmit-Ryzhova, Iosif Shkolnik, et al) were working in different styles (impressionism, symbolism, etc.) and strived to develop new methods of artistic expression by combining plastic, musical and poetic languages. The triangle (the translation of the group’s name) was its emblem - its sides (blue, red and yellow) symbolized ideas, feeling and will. The group first presented its works at the exhibition Modern Trends in Art (the Passage) and held three independent exhibitions in St. Petersburg (1909, 1910) and Vilno (1909-10) named Impressionists soon after. As a result of the shift, part of the group organized the Youth Union in the end of 1909. After 1910, the Treugolnik ceased to exist.
