IZHORA HILLS (Izhora Plateau) the highest western part of the so-called Ordovician Plateau. It received its name form the Izhora people who inhabited the territory. It stretches between the Luga, Oredezh and Tosna River valleys approaching St. Petersburg in the area of Krasnoe Selo. The height of the main tract reaches 100 meters with a maximum of 176 meters. In the north, the Izhora Hills are interrupted in the Preglint and Neva lowlands by the Baltic-Ladoga escarpment. The Hills are comprised of Ordovician limes, dolomites and sandstone and is highly karsted. The central part displays almost no features of hydrographic network, along the fringes, especially by the escarpment, in deep ravines and destroyed craters mineral seepages occur (in the Lopukhinka, Gostilitsy, Ropsha, Duderhof, Gatchina, Khrevitsy and some other places). Limes and dolomites are exploited as raw construction materials.
