Glukharka, river

Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Rivers

GLUKHARKA, a river in the north-west of St. Petersburg. It used to flow off from the marshes situated west of Dolgoe lake. In the course of the building up of adjacent territory, the upper reaches of the Glukharka were meliorated and converted into elongated ponds, stretching parallel to Planernaya Street and Kamyshovaya Street. Downstream, the river runs through Yuntolovo natural reserve (see Yuntolovo forest estate) and flows into lake Lakhtinsky Razliv. The ponds in the upper reaches of the Glukharka (40-70 metres wide, with the length varying from 1 kilometre to 1.5 kilometres) represent an original protected area of the reserve, while their banks dressed with trees create a contrast with the new buildings constructed nearby. The river gave name to Glukharskaya Street.
