KOLOMNA, a historical district in the west part of St. Petersburg, between the Bolshaya Neva, Moika, Fontanka and Kryukov Canal. The name appeared in the early 18th century, most likely, on account of working people from the town of Kolomna, located close to Moscow, who settled there. The development of Kolomna land was launched in the middle of the 18th century. In 1812, the Holy Virgin Intercession Church was erected in the centre of Kolomna (present-day Turgeneva Square), it was destroyed in 1934. Until the middle of the 19th century, Kolomna remained an outlying district of St. Petersburg, populated mainly with petty officials, workmen and tradesmen (see Alexander Pushkin The Little House in Kolomna, N.V. Gogol The Overcoat, The Portrait). Since the second half of the 19th, its territory was built up with apartment houses. Main thoroughfares are Sadovaya Street, Lermontovsky Avenue, Dekabristov Street and Angliisky Avenue. On the territory of Kolomna there is the Grand Choral Synagogue (2 Lermontovsky Avenue), the former palace of Grand Prince Alexey Alexandrovich (122 Moika River Embankment), the memorial apartment of A.A. Blok (57 Dekabristov Street), the memorial studio of I.E. Repin (5/3 Repina Square), the house where A.V. Suvorov lived (23 Kryukov Canal Embankment), etc. In modern city vocabulary, the place-name Kolomna is rarely used. The place-name has preserved in the name of the Kolomensky Foot-bridge across Griboedova Canal.
