LESNOY, a historical district in the north of St. Petersburg, between Engelsa Avenue to the west, Manchesterskaya Street to the north, Thoreza Avenue and Karbysheva Street to the east and Novorossiiskaya Street to the south. In 1811, the Practical School of Forestry (later renamed Forestry Institute, today - Academy of Forestry Engineering) was transferred here from Tsarskoe Selo. In the second half of the 19th century, the dacha area of the same name emerged to the north of the Forestry Institute. In 1889, the Machine Building Plant of Ayvaz (today Svetlana Joint-stock Company) was founded in the northern part of Lesnoy. By the beginning of the 20th century, the modern streets' planning was developed: Murinsky Avenue (today Second Murinsky Avenue), Angliisky Avenue (today Parkhomenko Avenue), Novosiltsevskaya Street (today Novorossiiskaya Street) and others. In the 1930s, Svetlanovsky Avenue was built. In the middle of the 1960s, a general reconstruction of Lesnoy was carried out; the territory was built up with standard brick houses, with the majority of them constructed by building societies. In Lesnoy, a number of scientific research establishments were concentrated: Sechenov Scientific Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Cardiology Scientific Research Institute, Radium Institute, Forestry Scientific Research Institute, etc. The former building of Lesnoy Board (13 Bolotnaya Street), the country estate of A.I. Danilevsky (1911, 22 Institutsky Avenue), Olga's Hospital Refuge (1911-12, 12/3 Second Murinsky Avenue) and others have been preserved. The recreation centre of Lesnoy is the park Dacha of Danilevsky with the Silver Pond. The place name has been preserved in the names of Lesnaya metro station and Lesnoy Avenue.
