NARVSKAYA ZASTAVA, the historical name of the northern part of Kirovsky District. It descends to an outpost on the post road to Narva and Reval (today Tallin), that was located on the place of present-day Stachek Square. Villages Avtovo, Volynkina, Tentelevka and Emelyanovka and country estates of the nobility along Peterhofskaya Road were situated on the territory of Narvskaya Zastava since the early 18th century. In 1801, the iron foundry from Kronstadt was transferred here, later reorganised into the Putilovsky Plant (today Kirov Plant). In the late 19th - early 20th centuries, Narvskaya Zastava was a neglected industrial outskirt and the centre of the workers' movement in St. Petersburg. In 1925-31, the first residential blocks were built in areas adjacent to Stachek Avenue. Large public facilities constructed at that time, like Gorky Palace of Culture (see the article Palaces and Houses of Culture), the School in Memory of the Tenth Anniversary of October Revolution (1927), department store and complex of food industry enterprises (1931), the House of Technical Studies (1932), Narvsky Health Centre (1933), Kirovsky District Soviet (see the article Houses of Soviets), close to which the monument to S.M. Kirov was placed in 1938, promoted the development of the region. In 1941-44, the front line went to the south of Narvskaya Zastava, many buildings and constructions of the region suffered damage from aerial bombing and artillery fire. In 1948-52, the area to the west of Narvskaya Zastava was mainly built up with 2-3-storied houses constructed of slag stones. The architecture of Stachek Avenue was shaped by the end of the 1950s. Along the avenue, the major part of Narvskaya Zastava monuments are located: the former estate of E.R. Dashkova Kiryanovo, Narvskie Triumphal Arch, Park named in honour of the 9 January (1920). Narvskaya Zastava is an important industrial area of St. Petersburg, with Krasny Khimik, Armalit, Ravenstvo and other enterprises located there.
