Categories / Economy/Personalia

PUTILOV Nikolay Ivanovich (1820-1880, St. Petersburg), entrepreneur, engineer. After he completed Officer’s Classes at the Naval School in 1840, he worked as a lecturer and served in the Navy Department until his resignation in 1857. A founding member of Obukhovsky Plant in 1863 he took part in solving technical issues related to construction and startup of the plant. He bought an iron foundry from the government in 1868, later named Putilovsky Plant (today, Kirovsky Plant), which initially made rails and started making railroad cars in 1874. He drew up a project of uniting seaways, river ways, and railways into a single system and built a commercial port near Gutuevsky Island, the Morskoy Canal, and a branch line (Putilovskaya Line) between the port and Nikolaevskaya Railroad as the first step toward implementation of this project. In the last years of his life he lived at 9 Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street. He was buried, just as he had willed, on the bank of the Ekateringofka River on Gladky Island commanding a view over his plant, his port, and the Morskoy Canal. A chapel was erected on his grave by architect F. S. Kharlamov. His remains were re-buried in the crypt of St. Nicholas Church in 1907, which was built by architect V. A. Kosyakov in 1901-06 in what is today Stachek Avenue. His grave was destroyed in 1951.
