BARANOVSKY Gavriil Vasilievich (1860-1920, St. Petersburg), architect, architecture historian, editor. Upon graduation from the College of Civil Engineers (1885), in 1885-1917, he served at the Construction Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs; at the same time in 1897-1905, he taught at the College of Hydraulic Engineers, and dedicated himself to the issues of building legislation. The apartment buildings of G.G. Eliseev (1889-1890, 64 Fontanka River Embankment; 1891-92, currently, 14 Lomonosova Street) feature his original interpretation of Neo-Renaissance and Classical motifs. He authored several new composition and planning methods. In 1890s, he designed the interiors of the mansion of the merchants Eliseev (14 Birzhevaya Line). The private apartment house of Baranovsky was characterized by the innovative design (1897, currently, 36 Dostoevskogo Street) with decor-free facade and terraced balconies. The building of Brothers Eliseev&Co. store (1902-03; 56 Nevsky Prospect; see Eliseev Store). The building of the Russian Geographical Society (1907-09, currently, 10 Grivtsova Lane) is characterized by modernization of classical forms. The composition of the Buddhist Temple (1909-15; 91 Primorsky Avenue) amalgamates traditions of the Tibetan architecture with features of the Northern Art Nouveau. Baranovsky compiled "The anniversary digests of the former students of the College of Civil Engineers (The School of Urban Planning)" (volumes 1-2, 1892-93); in 1894-1905, he edited the Stroitel magazine (prior to1895, Nashe Zhilische), created the fundamental Architectural Encyclopaedia of the Second Half of the 19th Century (volumes 1-7, 1902-08).
