Bonstedt L.L. (1822-1885), architect

BONSTEDT Lyubim Lyubimovich (Ludvig) (1822, St. Petersburg - 1885), architect, academy member (1846), professor of the Academy of Fine Arts (1858), court counsellor. He was a subject of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Having received his architectural education in Berlin under the supervision of F. Schinkel, he graduated from the General School of Urban Planning and from the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. In 1843, he came to St. Petersburg whereupon was conferred the title of free artist at the Academy of Fine Arts. From 1851, he was the Chief Architect of the court of the Grand Princess Elena Pavlovna, at the same time serving as chief architect and a member of Council of the First District of the Chief Administration for Railways and Public Buildings, the architect of the Salamandra Insurance Company. The following buildings have been erected in St. Petersburg according to the projects of Bonstedt: the house of the Countess A. R. Lamsdorf (1852, 20 Mokhovaya Street ), Yusupov Mansion (1852-58, 42 Liteiny Avenue ) and others. Bonstedt also participated in industrial construction: Kalinkinsky Brewery (1862), the reconstruction of the sugar mill of Leningrad on Vyborgskaya Embankment (1860s). In Oranienbaum, Bonstedt was involved in the building of the Chinese Palace and rebuilt the house of Ladies-in-Waiting (1853). In 1862, in cooperation with V. A. Schreter, he organized the St. Petersburg Circle of Architects (subsequently, St. Petersburg Society of Architects). From 1863, he lived in Got (Germany).
