CAVOS Albert Katarinovich (1800, St. Petersburg - 1863, Peterhof), architect, representative of the late Neoclassicism of Italian descent. A son of C. A. Cavos. He studied at the University of Padua (Italy) under the guidance of C. I. Rossi. He was a Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts (1846), Corresponding Member of several foreign academies. He was the Chief Architect of Imperial Theatres (from 1835), of the School of Pages, Postal Department. In the 1830s he worked under the supervision of Rossi on the construction of Alexandrinsky Theatre, the buildings of the Ministry of Education, and Administration of Imperial Theatres. He reconstructed the Bolshoy Kamenny (1836-38, has not survived), Kamennoostrovsky (1844) and Mikhailovsky (1859-60) theatres. The main work by Cavos is Mariinsky Theatre (1847-49, rebuilt by him in 1859), richly decorated inside and outside in the style of Eclecticism. He is the author of the wooden theatre in Krasnoye Selo (has not survived), the building of the orphanage (1846-48, 51 Lermontovsky Avenue) and of the Department of Postal Carriages (1844-46, 61 Bolshaya Morskaya Street). The daughter of Cavos married architect N. L. Benois. The son of Cavos, Cesar Albertovich Cavos (1824, St. Petersburg - 1883, Peterhof) was an architect, representative of Eclecticism, a Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts (1857), member of the City Duma. He worked mainly at the Department of Postal Offices, built a paper mill (1863, 136 Obvodny Canal Embankment), children's hospital (1865-70, 8 Ligovsky Avenue), his own mansion (1864-67, 18 Kirochnaya Street) and a number of apartment buildings. Both father and son are buried at Volkovskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
