SCHAUB Vasily Vasilyevich (1861, St. Petersburg - 1934, Leningrad), architect, Member of the Academy of Architecture (1892). Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (1885). He was an architect for insurance societies and charitable institutions. About 70 buildings constructed by him have survived. Among his early works, designed in the Eclectic style, are mansions designed for K.K. Schroder (32 Petrogradskaya Embankment 1888-1899) and M.E. Bonstedt (32 Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island, 1898-1899); and apartment houses at 20 Fifth Line of Vasilievsky Island (1890-91) and 13 Stremyannaya Street (1895). Schaub is one of the first people to bring the Art Nouveau style to St. Petersburg (oriented around the German Jugendstil style). He built mansions for A.L. Frank (8а Twenty-First Line of Vasilievsky Island, 1898-1900) and I.E. Riting (1/79 Kronverksky Avenue, 1899); shops for I.A. Alferov (23 Sadovaya Street, 1903-04); an ensemble of apartment houses on Avstriiskaya (Austrian) Square (13, 16, 20 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue, 1901-1906); and apartment houses at 46 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island(1904-1905), 21 and 23 Ryleeva Street(1907-1910), 16 Gangutskaya Street (1910), and 8/19 Kropotkina Street (1911-1912). Later he used the Neoclassical style, particularly with the apartment houses at 74 Bolshoy Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side (1912-1913), 3 Talalikhina Lane (1913), and 121 Fontanka River Embankment (1913-1914). After October 1917, he worked as an architect for a number of industrial organisations. From 1890-1902, he lived at 29 Kadetskaya (now Syezdovskaya) Line; in the middle of 1900s, at 13 Meschanskaya (now Grazhdanskaya) Street; in the early 1910s, at 21 Spasskaya (now Ryleeva) Street; and finally at 121 Fontanka River Embankment. He is buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
