Pogozhev (wrote under pen-name of Poselyanin) Evgeny Nikolaevich (1870-1931, Leningrad), church writer and journalist, Councilor of State (1913). In 1887-92 Poselyanin studied at the Faculty of Law of Moscow University. After graduating from the university he came to St. Petersburg in 1893, where he successively served at the Senate Chancellery (1894-99), at the Chancellery of the Ministry of Justice (1899-1903), and at the Chancellery of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (in 1903-12). In 1913, he was honoured with the rank of a hereditary noble. In 1892, he made his debute as a writer and author of numerous apologetic articles and papers on church history: Reliquiae of Russia, 1899; Russian church and Russian Hermits of the 19th century, 1901, etc. His works were remarkable for their simplicity, clarity and emotionality in presentation, and enjoyed great popularity (many of them were reprinted after 1990). He also contributed to Strannik, Tserkovnie Vedomosti, Russky Palomnik, Kormchy and other magazines, and travelled to many monasteries and holy places in Russia and the East. During World War I of 1914-18 Pogozhev wrote articles about Russian heroes and joined the Commission on German Crimes. After October 1917, he virtually ceased publishing and earned his living by tutoring. In 1924-25, he was exiled to Eastern Siberia. In December 1930, he was arrested in the so-called Affair of the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral and shot by firing squad a month and a half later in the House of Preliminary Detention on Shpalernaya Street. He lived at 8 Mokhovaya Street from 1911 (the building has not survived).
