ST. GEORGE CHURCH, Church of the Great Holy Martyr George the Victory-Bearer at 3 Moskovskoe Highway. A monument commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45; construction was paid for by donations of St. Petersburg citizens and enterprises in the park on Srednaya Rogatka, where in 1941-44 the city’s defensive frontline was held. Construction continued throughout 1994 and 1995 and was supervised by architects S. V. Lyubimov, P. L. Zykov, and E. F. Shapovalova. The Church of St. George the Victory-Bearer became the first religious building built in the city in 80 years. The small stone building with a belfry is crowned with a high spire; the facade is adorned with images of saints. The iconostasis was made by engraver V. A. Mironik; icons were painted by S. A. Khaygora, interior paintings were performed by artists E. P. Bolshakov and S. E. Bolshakov. In 1999-2000, the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh (architect A. M. Lebedev) in the Pskov style and a chapel in the name of the Tsar-Martyr were constructed on a nearby Island. In 1999-2003, the Church of Nativity designed in the eclectic style of the second part of the 19th century was erected in the memory of 2,000 years of Christianity (designs developed by the studio of architect I. P. Lyubarov).
