SYNTHETIC RUBBER, Lebedev Scientific Research Institute of, located at 1 Gapsalskaya Street. Was established in 1928 by S. V. Lebedev as the State Experimental Factory of Synthetic Rubber of type B (1928). The factory was transformed into a scientific research institute and named after Lebedev in 1945. It received its present-day status in 1998. It was here that synthetic rubber was produced for the first time in the world in 1931. Methods of fusion were invented and a mass industry was established in 1948-58. Theoretical and applied research into rubber and latex is undertaken at the institute. Developing polymers with special properties for the defence industry, aviation and space equipment and military shipbuilding occupies a considerable place in the work of the institute. One can see a memorial plaque devoted to Lebedev on the building of the institute.
