ARCHIVES, state repositories, scientific institutions, departmental associations collect, preserve, and work with documents and materials on the history of modern life. The major part of foundations for higher and central state institutions of the Russian Empire is concentrated in Petersburg’s archives. The Archive Committee of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region (39 Tavricheskaya Street) consists of the St. Petersburg Archive (SPA), the Leningrad Region State Archive (Vyborg, 1 Shturma Street), the St. Petersburg Historical and Political Archive (SP HPA), the St. Petersburg Historical Archive (SP HA), the St. Petersburg Archive of Literature and Arts (SP ALA), St. Petersburg Archive of Cinema, Photography and Audio Documents (SP CPhAD), the St. Petersburg Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation (SP ASTD), the Central State Archive of Documents for the Personnel of Liquidated Organisations of St. Petersburg (CSADPLO SP). In St. Petersburg there is also the Historical Archive, the Navy Archive, the St. Petersburg Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences Archive, and the Russian Arts Academy Archive. Special archives are arranged by branch administrations (pharmaceutical, cultural, capital development, trade, planning, etc.) and industrial associations, a number of the RAS institutes, higher schools, large museums and libraries, St. Petersburg archdiocese, public organisations (St. Petersburg Federal professional unions, Memorial society, St. Petersburg Nationalist Movements Research Group, et al.). The archive complex has bindery and restoration workshops, as well as microfilm and photo laboratories. The archives publish documents, develop scientific reference aids system, and provide archive materials for scientific, educational, agricultural uses as well as others.
