ZININ Nikolay Nikolaevich (1812-1880, St. Petersburg), organic chemist, Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1858). Graduated from Kazan University in 1833. In 1848-74, worked as professor at the Medical Surgical Academy (1 Pirogovskaya Embankment; memorial plaque installed). In 1842, he developed a method of producing aromatic amine through the reduction-process of a nitrocompound (Zinin reaction), synthesizing aniline and other aromatic amines for the first time, and laying the foundation for the production of synthetic dye, aromatic chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Founder of the Scientific School of Russian Chemists. One of the founders of the Russian Physics and Chemistry Society, and its first President (1868-77). In 1867-80, he lived at 17 Eighth Line of Vasilievsky Line. Buried at the Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
