KOVALEVSKY Maxim Maximovich (1851-1916, Petrograd), sociologist, lawyer, economist, political figure, Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1914). After graduating from the Faculty of Law of the University of Kharkov in 1872, he went on to study at a number of European universities, living abroad from 1887 on. He came to St. Petersburg in 1905 to be a professor at the Polytechnic Institute, transferring to the University of St. Petersburg in 1906. One of the founders of the Institute of Psychoneurology (1907), where served as the first Chair of Sociology in Russia, and then as Dean of the Faculty of Law in 1910. During the changes in 1905 and 1906, he established and led the Party of Democratic Reforms, joining the Central Committee of the Party of Progressivists in 1912-14. Kovalevsky published the Strana newspaper (1906-07) and the Vestnik Evropy Journal (1909-16). A deputy of the First State Duma in 1906, he was elected into the State Assembly during the 1907 elections, having been nominated by the Academic Assembly. In 1914 he became President of the Free Economic Society. He was also President of the Pedagogical Academy (1908), and Vice-Chairman (1895) and Chairman (1907) of the International Institute of Sociology. Kovalevsky left behind a large number of works on sociology, the history of the Great French Revolution and West European feudalism. One of the first to revive Masonic Lodges in Russia, he held a leading position at two St. Petersburg Masonic Lodges, The North Star and The Phoenix. In the 1910s, he lived at 32 Mokhovaya Street. Kovalevsky was buried at the Nikolskoe Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
