Popov A.S., (1859-1905), physicist

POPOV Alexander Stepanovich (1859-1905, St. Petersburg), physicist and electrical engineer. He graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1882. From 1883 to 1900, he taught at various military educational institutions of Kronstadt and St. Petersburg. In 1901, he assumed the post of a professor at St. Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute, to be promoted to the director of the institute in 1905. He was the first person to demonstrate the possibilities of wireless communication in 1895. In 1945, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR instituted Popov Memorial Gold Medal, awarded to those who have done outstanding research in this field. A street has been named after Popov, Professora Popova Street (formerly Pesochnaya Street, on Aptekarsky Island). Monuments were also erected in his memory at Kamennoostrovsky Avenue (1952, sculptor V.Y. Bogolyubov, architect N.V. Baranov), his bust by the house No. 3 at Krestovka River Embankment (1958, sculptor M.T. Litovchenko) and a number of memorial plaques. The latter are situated at: 31/32 Syezdovskaya Line, where he lived from 1900 to 1902; 5 Professora Popova Street, where he delivered lectures in 1903-05 (more plaques are set up inside the building to commemorate Popov's election as the first director of the institute and beside his study); at 7 Universitetskaya Embankment, where the first wireless message was received; at 2 Admiralteysky Avenue, inside the building where Popov taught from 1890 to 1900; 7 Pochtamtskaya Street, inside the building of A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communication. Popov memorial plaques were also set up in Kronstadt: at 31 Ammermana Street (there he lived from 1886 to 1898), at 35 Uritskogo Street, where he lived from 1895 to 1901, at 1 Makarovskaya Street (on the building where Popov worked from 1883 to 1901), on a pavilion in the yard, where one of the model radio transmitters was tested, and at 43 Sovetskaya Street, where he gave public lectures in 1890-1901. His name was also attached to the Central Museum of Communication, the School of Communication in Kronstadt, Technical and Scientific Society of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Communication etc. Popov memorial museums were set in his laboratory attached to "LETI" St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (1948) and in his flat at 5 Professora Popova Street (1967). The scientist was buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
