SECHENOV Ivan Mikhailovich (1829-1905), physiologist, philosopher, founder of Russian physiological scientific school, Associate (1869) and honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1904). He came to St. Petersburg in 1843. Here he graduated from the Main School of Military Engineering in 1848, before studying at Moscow University, from which he graduated in 1856. Later he worked and studied abroad. From 1860 to 1870, he held a professorship at the Medical Surgical Academy (3 Pirogovskaya Embankment; memorial plaque). Afterwards, he moved to Odessa where he worked at Novorossysk University from 1871 to 1876. On his return to St. Petersburg in 1876, he was appointed to a professorship at St. Petersburg University, which he held until 1888. During his tenure Sechenov started the physiological laboratory within the university. In 1889, he moved to Moscow, where he remained. His major works are dedicated to the physiology of the nervous system. His classic work entitled Reflexes of the Brain gives the ground to the reflexive nature of conscious and unconscious activity. The name of Sechenov was attached to the Institute for Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1956, whereas the Academy of Sciences instituted the Sechenov Prize. In 1935, a monument to Sechenov (sculptor I.F. Bezpalov) was set up in the garden of the Institute of Experimental Medicine (12 Akademika Pavlova Street).
