Steklov V.A., (1863/64-1926), mathematician

STEKLOV Vladimir Andreevich (1863-1926), mathematician, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1910), vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1919. He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Kharkov University in 1887. From 1906 to 1919, he held a professorship at St. Petersburg University. On the initiative of Steklov, the Physics and Mathematics Institute was attached to the Academy of Sciences in 1921. He headed the institute until the end of his life. In 1926, the institute was named after Steklov, though after its reorganisation in 1934, the name of Steklov was retained by the Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His major works are dedicated to the solution of mathematical problems, dealing with the issues of natural science, mainly in mathematical physics. Steklov was buried at Literatorskie Mostki. The house where he lived (1/2 Lieutenant Shmidt Embankment), bears a memorial plaque.
