Khariton Y. B., (1904-1994), physicist

KHARITON Yuly Borisovich (1904, St. Petersburg - 1994), physicist and physical chemist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1953 and Hero of Socialist Labour in 1949, 1951, and 1954. He graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnical University in 1925 (memorial plaque). He worked at the Physical Technical Institute from 1921 and the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and other research institutes from 1931. In 1934, he became a professor at the Leningrad Industrial Institute. He was evacuated from Leningrad in 1941. Khariton wrote works on nuclear physics, chemical kinetics, combustion and explosion physics. One of the project managers engaged in the nuclear project of the USSR, he was also the general director and research manager of Arzamas-16, the State Scientific Centre of the Russian Federation. He was awarded Stalin Prizes in 1949, 1951, and 1954 and a Lenin Prize in 1956. He lived at 61 Lesnoy Avenue. Khariton"s bust sculpted by V. K. Dumanyan in 1985 was put in the Alley of Heroes in the Moscow Victory Park.
