CHEBYSHEV Pafnuty Lvovich (1821-1894, St. Petersburg), mathematician and mechanical engineer, Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 1859. He graduated from Moscow University with a major in physics and mathematics in 1841. He came to St. Petersburg in 1847 to work at Petersburg University until 1882, becoming a Professor in 1850. He was also a teacher at Alexandrovsky Lyceum in 1852. He wrote works on number theory, probability theory, integral calculus, mechanical theory, etc. He founded a mathematical school in St. Petersburg. The Academy of Sciences of the USSR established Chebyshev Prize in 1944 in his honour. He lived at the present-day 2/1 Leitenanta Shmidta Embankment (memorial plaque).
