SOPIKOV Vasily Stepanovich (1765-1818, St. Petersburg), publisher, bookseller, librarian, bibliographer. In 1788, he opened a bookshop in Gostiny Dvor; in 1791-1811, ran a public library in his shop (in 1800, it contained 1,410 volumes), published its catalogues (the first catalogue was printed in 1790). Sopikov made an important contribution to the establishment of the Russian Book Fund, controlled deliveries of copies of all publications to the library, and worked on compiling the library catalogue. He also prepared a publication entitled “An Experiment of Russian Bibliography,” (parts 1-5, 1813-21), in which he presented information on over 13,200 publications in Russian and Church Slavonic languages published from early Slavonic book-printing through the 19th century.
