GUKOVSKY Grigory Alexandrovich (1902 - 1950, St. Petersburg), literature historian, Ph.D. (Doctor of Philological Sciences, 1936). Graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Petrograd University in 1923. Lectured at the Leningrad State University, held a professorship there since 1936, and chaired the Department of the History of Russian Literature in 1939-43 and 1946-49. From 1937, headed a group of researchers from the Pushkin Institute of Russian Literature involved in the study of the 18th century Russian Literature. Wrote books on the history of the 18th century Russian literature, and the works of Alexander Pushkin and Nikolay Gogol. Lived at 24 Griboedova Canal Embankment. In 1949, he was arrested on trumped-up charges, and died at Lefortovo prison in Moscow.
