Turner H. I., (1858 - 1941), surgeon, orthopaedist

TURNER Henrich Ivanovich (1858, St. Petersburg - 1941, Leningrad), surgeon, orthopaedist, Doctor of Medicine (1894). He graduated from the Medical Surgical Academy (1881). From 1896 he was professor of the Military Medical Academy, where he created the first orthopaedics clinic in Russia (1900; now Turner Chair of Military Traumatology and Orthopaedics) On the basis of an orphanage for disabled children he organised an Institution for recovery of physically handicapped children (from 1932 the Research Institute, now Turner Research Institute of Orthopaedics). Turner was buried in the Bolsheokhtinskoe Cemetery. There are memorial plaques in the clinic of the Research Institute (12 Lakhtinskaya Street), in the Institute of Lung Diseases (12, wing 3, Second Murinsky Avenue), and in the chair of the Military Medical Academy (Botkinskaya Street, 13); in the yard of the building there is a monument to Turner (2000, sculptor A. P. Timchenko).
