PUSHKAREV Ivan Ilyich (1803-1848, St. Petersburg), historian, statistician, regional ethnographer. Graduated from the Gymnasium in Simbirsk. Lived in St. Petersburg from 1834. Pushkarev served as a clerk at the Main Engineers College. Worked at the State Inspection from 1836. Served at the Statistic Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1843. Pushkarev wrote Description of St. Petersburg and Major Towns of the St. Petersburg Province (volumes 1-4, 1839-42), it was based on archival materials. The work was republished with considerable abridgements under the name Nicholas's St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg, 1999). In 1843, Pushkarev published The St. Petersburg and Regional Guide-Book. In 1846, he published A Historical Reference of St. Petersburg Sights. In 1844-46, he published A Historical, Geographical and Statistic Description of Russia (volumes 1-4). During the last years of his life he worked at The History of Imperial Guards. Only the first volume of The History of Imperial Guards was published, in 1848.
