Krasnogo Kursanta Street

KRASNOGO KURSANTA STREET (until 1923, Bolshaya Spasskaya Street), located between Bolshoy Avenue of the Petrogradskaya Side and Novoladozhskaya Street. Appeared in the 1720s, in what was then the Nevsky Garrison Regiment settlement (until 1727, the Koltovskoy Regiment). The Holy Transfiguration Church, destroyed in the 1940s, stood at the intersection with Novoladozhskaya Street (hence the former name of the street). The street was built up with military educational establishments, such as the 2nd Cadet Corps (building no. 14-16, 1795-1803, architect, F.I. Demertsov) and the Cadet corps Riding-Hall (building no. 18, 1819-20). In the 19th - early 20th centuries, the Court Regiment was quartered in buildings nos. 17, 18 and 21 (since 1859, the Konstantinovskoe Military School), where future military theorist and pedagogue M.I. Dragomirov studied in 1848-49. Building no. 17 housed the Military Topographic School from 1885 (from 1918, the Military Topographic Courses; from 1937, the Military Topographic Command College, the Military Theoretical Air Force School, and later the Mozhaysky Military-Space Engineering University), where scientist-geodesist V.V. Vitkovsky lived in 1905. Building no. 21 housed the Pavlovskoe Military School from 1894. In the 1910s, the Frontier Guard Independent Corps quarters were constructed at building no. 34). In 1918, the First Infantry Courses of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army were opened in building no. 17 (hence the street's modern name). The Krasnoe Znamya Knitting Production Association is located at building no. 25.
