TAVRICHESKAYA STREET, called Sadovaya Street from the 1820s to 1859, and known as Slutskogo Street from 1918 to 1944, from Suvorovsky Avenue to Shpalernaya Street. The street was laid in the mid-18th century. Its left side in the area between Kirochnaya Street and Shpalernaya Street sets the limit of Tavrichesky Garden (Taurida Garden, hence the name). The street was renamed in 1918 in commemoration of A.I. Slutsky, a member of revolutionary movement (1884-1918). The right side of the street was built over in the early 20th century: the apartment houses Nos. 3, 5, 7, 11 and 17, built in 1909-15 (architect A.S. Khrenov); house No. 8, former Ministerial (Garden) Pavilion of Taurida Palace (1906-07, architect A.I. von Gogen). The corner of house No. 35 (1903-04, architect M.N. Kondratyev) is marked with a round projection, topped with a dome-shaped tower; poet and philosopher Vyach. I. Ivanov lived here from 1905 to 1913. He held regular meetings of poets and artists in his flat on the top floor ("in the tower") (see Ivanov's Wednesdays). In 1906-08 this building accommodated E.N. Zvantseva Arts School.
