OBUKHOVSKOY OBORONY AVENUE from Alexandra Nevskogo Square to Karavaevskaya Street. It was laid in the early 18th century as a road to Arkhangelsk through Shlisselburg and was known as Shlisselburgskaya Road, Shlyutenburgskaya Road, and Arkhangelogorodskaya Road. The construction of brickworks started along the road in the first quarter of the 18th century. There were a number of estates belonging to the nobility there in the 18th century: Prince G. A. Potemkin's Ozerki, Prince A. A. Vyazemsky's Alexandrovskoe Settlement, Prince B. A. Kurakin's Dacha, A. I. Rumyantsev's Murzinka Village, as well as Smolenskaya Yamskaya Sloboda. The Porcelain Works (today, Lomonosovsky Porcelain Works) were founded at number 151 in 1744. The Holy Trinity Church also known as Easter Cake was erected at number 235 in 1785-90. Industrial enterprises were built from the second third of the 19th century. Pal's factory was opened at number 70 in 1837 renamed as Nogin Factory in 1920-90s. Today, it is known as Alexander Nevsky Manufactory. The Manufactory of the Maxwell Brothers was opened at number 86 in 1844. It was renamed as Rabochy Factory after the October of 1917 and is now known as Petrovskaya Manufactory. Semyannikovsky Plant (today, Nevsky Plant) was built at number 51 in 1857. Obukhovsky Steel Foundry was founded at number 129 in 1863 and renamed as Bolshevik Works in 1922-92. Parts of the road each had their own names from the mid-19th century. These were Shlisselburgsky Avenue, Sela Smolenskogo Avenue (Krupskoy Avenue from 1926), Sela Farforovogo Zavoda Avenue (Sela Volodarskogo Avenue from 1920s), Sela Alexandrovskogo Avenue (Pamyati Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue from 1931), and Derevni Murzinki Avenue. They were joined together in 1952 and named Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue (Avenue of the Obukhovskaya Defence) in memory of the Obukhovskaya Defence of 1901. Among the buildings erected in the 19th century to the early 20th century were the elevator built at number 7 that now accommodates Nevskaya Melnitsa Joint-Stock Company, chapel of Our Lady’s Church of Joy for All Who Sorrow built by architect A. I. von Gogen at number 24 in 1906-09, and water tower built by engineer F. S. Yasinsky and architect G. V. Voynevich at numbers 123-127 in 1891-93. The avenue was reconstructed after the October of 1917 with new residential houses, works, and houses of culture built and gardens and parks laid out. The image of the avenue is made of industrial landscapes and broad views of the Neva River. Most buildings are concentrated in Alexandra Nevskogo Square and at the intersection of Ivanovskaya Street and the square in front of the River Station. In the avenue, there are buildings of the Nevsky District Administration constructed by architects E. A. Levinson, I. I. Fomin, and T. E. Gedike at number 163 in 1940, Krupskaya House of Culture built by architect S. I. Ovsyannikov at number 105 in 1926, Nevsky House of Culture built by architect E. A. N. Kuskov as the project manager at number 195 in 1970, and Proletarskaya metro station opened in 1981. The avenue is associated with V. I. Lenin's life and activities (houses 120 and 223). N. K. Krupskaya was a teacher at Smolensky Sunday Classes at number 107 in 1891-96. There are monuments to Lenin erected near houses 7 and 149, to Krupskaya by sculptor L. M. Kholina and architect L. L.
