Categories / Capital/Personalia

IVAN VI (1740, St. Petersburg — 1764, Schlisselburg Fortress), Emperor (1740-1741). He was the son of Anna Leopoldovna and Prince Antony Ulrich of Brunswick, grandson of Tsar Ivan V (brother of Peter the Great). Childless Empress Anna Ioannovna made him the heir to the throne on 16 October 1740 (after her death, E.I. Biron was the child's regent; later his mother took the post). He was dethroned by Elizaveta Petrovna on 25 November 1741 and kept in prison in Riga, Dunamunde, Ranenburg, Kholmogory; from 1756, he was kept in Schlisselburg Fortress. He was killed by guards on the night of 5 July 1764, during a rescue attempt headed by V.Y. Mirovich. He was secretly buried on the territory of the fortress.
