MECKLENBURG-STRELITZ, German ruling house, whose members lived in Russia. Georg Avgust Ernest Adolph Karl Ludwig, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1824-1876), was Artillery General (1861), married the Grand Princess Catherine Mikhailovna (1827-94) in 1851, and remained in the Russian service; in 1856, he became inspector of the infantry battalions. His sons Georgy (1859-1909), Major General (1902), Mikhail (1863-1934), Adjutant General (1915), and his daughter Elena (1857-1936) (later Princess of Saxen-Altenburg), together inherited the Mikhailovsky Palace (sold to the Treasury in 1895), Oranienbaum, and Kamenny Island. Georgy Georgievich Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz entered a morganatic marriage with Countess N.F. Karlova, who possessed a residence at 46 Fontanka River Embankment (built in the early 18th century; rebuilt in 1843, architect V.Y. Langwagen; and in 1895, architect V.P. Statsenko), and an apartment house at 5 Troitskaya Street (now Rubensteina Street). In 1896, he created a chamber music string quartet in St. Petersburg, which bore his name (after 1917, it became part of the Philharmonic).
