ISAKOV Ivan Stepanovich (1894-1967), Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet (1955), Hero of the Soviet Union (1965), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958), Doctor of Naval Sciences (1946). Studied in the Technological Institute in St. Petersburg, in 1914 was conscripted to the Navy, in early 1917 graduated from Special Midshipman Courses, in the fall of the same year took part in the battles with the German fleet in Moonsund Strait (Muhu Strait), in 1918 took part in the Ice campaign of the Baltic Fleet from Helsingfors to Kronstadt, and in 1919 - in the repulsion of the attack of British boats on the base of the Baltic Fleet in Kronstadt. Graduated from the Course of Sweeping and Blockading Techniques (1923) and advanced training courses for chief command staff of the Naval Academy (1928). In 1932-35, served as senior lecturer of the Department for Strategy and Operational Tactics of the Voroshilov Naval Academy. In 1933-35, Isakov served as Chief of Staff of the Baltic Fleet but was dismissed from office after the loss of a B-3 submarine in training manoeuvres. In 1935-37 served as instructor, and then as lecturer of the Command Department of the Naval Academy. In 1937 Isakov was re-appointed Chief of Staff, and in August 1937 - January 1938, appointed commander of the Baltic Fleet. In 1938-39, he served as Deputy People’s Commissar of Naval Forces and Acting Chief of the Naval Academy. In 1939-46, Isakov was First Deputy People’s Commissar of the Naval Forces. During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40 he co-ordinated operations of the Baltic Fleet and the Ladoga Military Flotilla with the operations of the army of the North-Western Front. In 1940-1942, Isakov served as Chief of General Naval Staff of Naval Forces. At the outset of the Great Patriotic War assumed co-ordination of the operations of the Baltic Fleet, Ladoga and Chudskoy Military Flotillas with the land forces, later participated in military operations in the Black Sea. In 1942, Isakov was severly wounded and left the ranks. After the war he held a number of high ranking positions. Published works on naval history, a collection of stories. Isakov was also the Stalin Prize laureate. (1951).
