MILUTIN Dmitry Alexeevich (1816-1912), count (from 1878), statesman and military leader, historian and author of memoirs, Field Marshal General (1898), Adjutant General (1859), Honorary Fellow of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1866), Doctor of Russian History (1866). Brother of N.A. Milutin. Graduated from the Military Academy with Excellence in 1836. Served in the military from 1833, and in 1839-44 took part in military operations in the Caucasus; from 1845, he was active as a lecturer at the Military Academy; in 1856-59, he was appointed Chief of General Staff Forces of the Caucasus; in 1859-61, he assumed the functions of Deputy Minister of War. In 1861-81, he held the post of Minister of War; in this capacity he initiated and directed military reforms throughout the 1860s-70s. From 1881, he was in retirement and lived on his estate in the Crimea. Milutin was President of the Military Academy of Law (from 1881), and President of the Nikolaevsky Academy of the General Staff (from 1883). Milutin was also a Fellow of the Russian Geographic Society (from 1846), an Honorary Fellow of the University of Kharkov, University of Moscow, and University of Kiev, as well as an Honorary Fellow of the Medical Surgical Academy, the Russian Geographic Society, the Russian Technical Society, and the Odessa Society for History and Antiquities.
