Orlovsky E.S. (1929 - 2003), human rights activist

ORLOVSKY Ernest Semenovich (1929, Leningrad - 2003, St. Petersburg) was a human rights activist. He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University (1952), and served as research assistant of the Scientific Research Institute of Metrology (1965-92), and a member of the American Mathematical Society (1974). Orlovsky authored more than 30 papers and over 400 essays on logic, mathematics and patenting. From the middle of the 1950s, he defended legal constitutional rights and liberties of citizens, devoting himself to legal education. In 1956-57, he was a participant of the circle of R.I. Pimenov, and a witness for the defence in his trial. In 1958, he raised money to help political prisoners. He was a participant of the seminar of S. Y. Maslov (1976-82), member of Memorial Society (from 1988). Orlovsky served as expert of the Constitutional Commission of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1990), as expert of the Committee of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation for Human Rights (1990-93), and as expert of the Presidential Commission for Human Rights in the Russian Federation (1993-96). He published the text of the report by N. S. Khrushchev during the in-camera meeting of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1956) with commentaries, 2,000 Words Programme of Czech Democrats (1968), the agreements of the Polish Solidarity Movement (August 1981), a critical analysis of the draft of the new USSR Constitution (1977) in the underground press; Orlovsky also authored essays in the journal Sum (under the pseudonym of Kukushkin, 1979-82). From 1957 on, was subjected to many searches and interrogations. Orlovsky lived at 13 Vosstaniya Street. He is buried in Kovalevskoe Cemetery.
