LAUNITZ (v. der Launitz) Vladimir Fedorovich (1855-1906), statesman, Major-General (1905). He graduated from Page Corps school in St. Petersburg (1873). In 1873-87 he served in Guards Cavalry, participated in the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78. In 1901-02 the vice-governor of Arkhangelsk, in 1902-05 Tambov governor, since December of 1905 the chief of St. Petersburg administration; occupied a state apartment at 6 Admiralteysky Avenue. Launitz was killed by a member of socialist-revolutinary party E.F. Kudryavtsev on December 21, 1906 during the ceremony of opening of the skin disease clinic attached to the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg.
