VORONIN Mikhail Stepanovich (1838, St. Petersburg 1903, St. Petersburg), botanist, public figure, entrepreneur, patron of arts, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1898). He graduated from St. Petersburg University with a major in physics and mathematics. Voronin was one of the founders of ontogenesis in mycology and the author of research studies on the life cycle of a number of fungi. He received a Ph. D. Botany at Novorossiisk University in 1874, and also became an honorary member of Kharkov University and Yuriev University in 1902. He lived in his own house built by architect P. Y. Suzor at the corner of Ninth Line, Vasilievsky Island, and Bolshaya Neva River Embankment (today, 11 Lieutenant Schmidt Street). He also had a dacha built by architect P. P. Buk in Mustamyaki and owned an apartment house and the so-called M. S. Voronin's public bathhouses built by architect Suzor at 1 Fonarny Lane - 82 Moika River Embankment. Voronin donated considerable amounts for the construction of a greenhouse in St. Petersburg University and provided financial support to Rozhdestvensky City School. He was buried at Novodevichie Cemetery.
