PUBLISHING HOUSE OF PLUCHART А. A. was founded by printer Alexander Ivanovich Pluchart (1777-1827), French by birth who came to St. Petersburg in 1806 and entered the Russian service. Pluchart created the printing office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in St. Petersburg and became its head in 1808. He was appointed the director of the Senate Printing Office. He resigned in 1814. In the 1800s, he opened a private printing office, lithoprinting office and book shop (15 Nevsky Prospect and close to it on Bolshaya Morskaya Street), he published literary works in both Russian and French languages, albums with prints and lithographs (including views of St. Petersburg and representations of its inhabitants), artists A. E. Martynov, A. O. Orlovsky, K. I. Kolman, P. A. Alexandrov, K. P. Beggrov, А. Tozelli, K. P. Bryullov and A. P. Bryullov participated in the creation of them. After the death of Pluchart his company was inherited by his widow and by his son Adolf Alexandrovich (1806-65) who concentrated on publishing literary productions: works by V. I. Dal, N. V. Gogol (the first editions of Arabesques and The Inspector General), Faust by J. W. Goethe translated by E. I. Huber etc. The illustrated guide book of St. Petersburg prepared by A. P. Bashutsky, Panorama of St. Petersburg was published in 1834. The fundamental publishing project Encyclopaedic Lexicon edited by N. I. Grech and O. I. Senkovsky in 40 volumes was only partly accomplished (in 1835-41, 17 volumes were published). In 1858-59, Pluchart published the journal Veselchak (Cheery Fellow).
