VOROBYEV Maxim Nikiforovich (1787-1855, St. Petersburg), painter. He was a student of F. Y. Alexeev in the Academy of Arts in 1798-1809, a teacher and a professor from 1815 and 1823, respectively. A founder of the Russian romantic mountain landscape, he combined accuracy of perspective architecture with the highly emotional impression of the city using various effects of daylight and night-time illumination. He painted such St. Petersburg landscapes as Neva Embankment near the Academy of Arts in 1835 and Sunset in the Environs of St. Petersburg in 1832, both pictures exhibited in the State Russian Museum and Autumn Night in St. Petersburg in 1835, exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery. He also painted landscapes of Moscow and Russian country towns. He was attached to the Russian Army in Germany and France in 1813-14 and the Balkan Mountains in 1828, also travelled in the Middle East in 1820-21 and Italy in 1844-45. He was buried in the Necropolis of Artists.
